Do you want to start your workday feeling clear-headed instead of scattered? Here are 31 morning journal prompts to help you get there.
For mornings when you’re overwhelmed by your inbox, unmotivated to open your laptop, or just running on autopilot before a client callโjournaling can help you reconnect with yourself before the day pulls you in ten directions.
But knowing what to write can be its own barrier. In this guide, I’m sharing 31 morning journaling prompts to help you set the tone for your day and run your business from intention instead of reaction.
What is a Good Morning Journal Prompt?
A good morning journal prompt helps you envision and plan a positive day ahead. Every morning prompt should do the following:
- Be open-ended enough to allow you to explore your mind
- Encourage positive thinking and self-reflection
- Help you set intentions for the day
- Be simple enough to tackle when you’re still groggy
- Inspire new perspectives
The goal of a daily journaling habit isn’t to write something a masterpiece each morning. It’s not a blog post or a thesis, and nobody’s grading it.
It’s simply to document your thoughts as they come, so you get clarity before you start making decisions for your business. And that’s exactly what Morning Pages are about.
The Concept of Morning Pages
Morning Pages is a journaling technique developed by Julia Cameron, author of The Artist’s Way.
She talked about the concept of artist dates and how they can influence how creative you become.
Morning pages, on the other hand, is your permission to brain dump.
The idea is to write three pages of raw, unfiltered writing every morning. Dump everything on your mind onto paperโthe client project you’re working on, your plan to launch your course, or that idea you haven’t told anyone about yet.
No edits, no judgment, just you and your thoughts, even when they’re not coherent.
Cameron describes Morning Pages as “spiritual windshield wipers,” because they clear away the gunk of self-doubt, anxiety, and creative blocksโand she’s SO damn right.
What you’re left with is a clutter-free, peaceful, and productive mind, which, if you run your own business, is everything.
How to Start Morning Pages
There are real benefits to journaling as a business owner. It helps you develop:
- Creative thinking (hello, better content and offers)
- A more positive outlook, even in slow seasons
- Emotional resilience for the parts of business ownership nobody warns you about
- Personal growth that keeps pace with your business growth
To make morning pages journaling part of your daily routine, all you need is three simple things:
A notebook, a pen, and a few quiet minutes before the workday takes over.
1. Get a Blank Notebook
Any notebook will do, but choose one you actually enjoy writing in.
Dated or undated, plain or bulleted, paperback or hardcover… that’s your call.
If using a physical notebook doesn’t fit your routine or vibe, you can journal digitally instead.
Or you can be like me and do both. I’m a pen and paper girl, who also loves the screen. I’m a literal blogging queen, sooo… you get the gist.
I write in my journal notebook every morning and sometimes reiterate my feelings by drawing them on the freeform app on my iPad. Other times, I just type away in the Journal app on my iPhone.
2. Find a Quiet Space
Choose a corner of your homeโaway from your desk, if possibleโwhere you can settle in before “work you” clocks in.
Make a cup of coffee or tea, light a candle, or whatever makes the few minutes feel like yours instead of one more task.
3. Write Three Pages
Set a timer for 20 minutes and write whatever comes to mind.
Don’t censor, don’t overthink, and don’t worry about whether it “makes sense.” Keep going until you’ve filled three pages.
There’s no “right” way to do this. Some mornings you’ll fill pages easily; other mornings you’ll manage a few lines before your brain gives up. Both are fine. The goal is consistency, not perfectionโthe same principle that makes any business habit actually stick.
